Christmas dinner planning questions

How much ham do I need per person?

A common rule of thumb is about 3/4 pound of bone-in ham per person, or 1/2 pound boneless, a little more if you want leftovers. For 10 people that's a 7 to 8 pound bone-in ham. The planner sizes it from your guest count.

Do I need to cook a spiral ham?

Most spiral hams are fully cooked. USDA says to reheat a cooked ham to 140Β°F; a ham that isn't fully cooked needs 145Β°F and a 3 minute rest. Check the label, then follow the recipe.

What can I make ahead for Christmas dinner?

Cookies, mince pies, pecan pie, cranberry sauce and tamales all keep, so make them in the days before. The planner puts those on the day before or earlier and times the ham and sides for dinner.

How long do Christmas leftovers keep?

Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours and eat them within 3 to 4 days, or freeze them. Reheat to 165Β°F.
